This is not to say that Young didn't write plenty of his own music, and that much of it wasn't engaging, but even when he was being original, he was drawing on standard notions of what the music of a country or ethnic group sounded like. "La Cucaracha" heard in a Southwestern sequence the Cavalry arriving to "The William Tell Overture" and so on. ![]() And so it went, with "Yankee Doodle Dandy" accompanying the movement to the U.S. No sooner were the heroes in Paris than a bit of the "Maxixe" would be heard. On the contrary, his score reveled in them. It suggested that Young, viewing the movie properly as one big entertainment, wasn't going to be worried about indulging in clichés. Fogg's own theme, not surprisingly, was "Rule, Britannia," and it turned up repeatedly in many different guises. Around the World in 80 Days offered extensive opportunities for this tendency, as the main character, Phileas Fogg, and his valet, Passepartout, travel from country to country. He was also known for using existing material and weaving it into his own writing, to the point that he sometimes seemed as much an arranger as a composer. Young had an unusual gift for melody and was known for scoring pop hits with his tunes, among them "Stella by Starlight" and "Sweet Sue (Just You)." That gift certainly hadn't abandoned him at the end the lilting "Around the World" was one of his most memorable themes. Its popularity was aided by the release of the film's main theme, a waltz called "Around the World," as a single that reached the Top 20 in the soundtrack version, with competing chart renditions by Mantovani and (with lyrics set by Harold Adamson) Bing Crosby and the McGuire Sisters.ĭoes all this mean that Young's score for Around the World in 80 Days was his best? No, but it may be his most characteristic. In the aftermath of the Academy Awards ceremony on March 27, 1957, the Decca Records soundtrack album for Around the World in 80 Days became a massive hit, entering the Billboard chart for the week ending April 13 and rising to number one for the first of ten weeks on July 22, which made it second only to the Elvis Presley soundtrack Loving You as the most successful LP of 1957. In fact, it won five Oscars, one of them for Young, a sentimental favorite given his recent demise, since the composer had never won previously despite having been nominated 21 times before. It was also a considerable success, winning the Academy Award for best picture and out-grossing every movie of 1957 except the similarly epic The Ten Commandments. The 167-minute epic film version of Jules Verne's 1873 novel about a man who wagers he can accomplish the journey suggested in the title was a cinematic extravaganza mounted by brash producer Michael Todd in a widescreen process he had immodestly dubbed Todd-A-O. Veteran Hollywood composer Victor Young died of a heart attack at age 56 on November 11, 1956, three-and-a-half weeks after the premiere of Around the World in 80 Days, one of the last of hundreds of movies for which he wrote music. ![]()

I still like to use dB Audio Player but I have no issue with anyone prefering to use a different audio player program. I hope this helps explain the need for separate codecs for dMC r12+ and for dB Audio Player. But right now there are 2 sets of programs and they do not communicate with one another. Eventually, after all programs are updated, there will likely be only a single line of programs. Prior to that point, there was only a single line of products. This is, as you point out, a confusing state of affairs but this arose because dMC's developer and programmer (Spoon) saw a need to do a complete re-write of Music Converter (which you can conceptualize as kind of the basic engine underlying the other dBpowerAMP programs). m4a codec in Legacy Codec Central will work for dMC r11.5 or earlier, Sveta, CD Writer r2, and/or dB Audio Player as long as it is installed a single time (and the installations of programs and codecs are done correctly according to the instructions that LtData alludes to). m4a codec in Codec Centrtal will work with any version of dMC r122 or the r13 beta and it will work for CD Writer r3 as long as it has been installed once. Within each family of programs, you only need a single version of a given codec. Eventually this line will include newer and re-written versions of Sveta and dB Audio Player as well. The second, newer line, consists of dMC r12+ and dB CD Writer r3 (currently in beta). The original product line consists of dBpowerAMP Music Converter r11.5 (and earlier versions), dB Audio Player (both versions r2 and r3 beta), Sveta, and dB CD Writer r2. This is perfectly reasonable except that the dBpowerAMP line of programs is not, at this time, a single product line but is actually a double product line. However, your actual concern may be the expectation that you should only need to use a single. ![]() m4a this will not help WinAmp play such files unless it has its own codec. "As a result, the Ku Klux Klan and other racist groups adopted a close form of Masonic ritualism," Parfrey says. Freemasonry and other fraternal groups, which said they welcomed all comers who believed in God, were primarily Protestant in perspective. Its members dressed in Native American garb and had rituals inspired by that culture-and yet refused to allow Native Americans into their society. Among the more troubling societies was a fairly large and important group, The Improved Order of the Red Men, which dates back to the early 1800s. The question of who gets admitted to these groups recurs as a theme through history. As Parfrey puts it, taking in the breadth of them provides "a snapshot of America." But secret societies had many purposes and took many shapes: labor unions, business groups, rural/agrarian organizations, religious and occult organizations, sobriety groups, drinking groups, immigrants, anti-immigrant organizations. Of those "More than Six Hundred Secret Societies," Freemasonry is the grandaddy, "like AA is the archetype of all the 12-step sobriety movements," Parfrey says. And the subtitle says it all: A Compilation of Existing Authentic Information and the Results of Original Investigation as to the Origins, Derivation, Founders, Development, Aims, Emblems, Character, and Personnel of More than Six Hundred Secret Societies in the United States, Supplemented by Family Trees of Groups and Societies, Names of Many Representative Members. ![]() Stevens's The Cyclopaedia of Fraternities (1899). "Some service-oriented organizations, like Lions or Elks, have a great deal of secret ritual within its structure. "That's our perspective we know that others may feel differently," he says. Parfrey defines a "secret society" as a social group that demands an oath of allegiance to join. "These words are thought to refer to what primitives do in foreign lands." Ritual America shows that hundreds of ritualistic oaths and procedures are practiced behind the doors of lodges and clubs, even today. "Despite the success of Joseph Campbell's PBS series a couple decades ago, what good American thinks he's practicing 'rites' or 'rituals?'" Parfrey asks. Given the vast number of cults and sub-cults, Parfrey knew his research would be surprising to many. But none of the books in the latest wave of pro-Masonic and conspiratorial literature, says Parfrey, "had an image-heavy and sociological approach as does Ritual America." In recent years, Dan Brown's Da Vinci Code bestsellers revived popular interest in secret societies. The essay stirred up controversy, even leading Marilyn Manson to title one of his songs "King Kill 33." One of the leading subjects of his research, conspiracy theorist James Shelby Downard, proposed a scenario about the JFK assassination that contained a fascinating speculation about the importance of Freemasonic "twilight language" (double and triple meanings, numerology, and onomatology). In 1987 Parfrey published his first essay on this theme, "King-Kill 33," in the first edition of his book, Apocalypse Culture. ![]() ![]() ![]() The Hidden Treasure of Area Zero for Pokémon Scarlet or Pokémon Violet: Downloadable Content NEW GAME EXPERIENCES, ENTERTAINMENT, AND PRODUCTS: “As we invite fans to ‘Pokémon Together’ in 2023, these new experiences across the brand reflect the growing world of Pokémon and the many ways it continues to connect and bring joy to people of all ages around the world.”ĭetails for all the initiatives revealed in the Pokémon Presents are below. “Pokémon Day is the most exciting day of the year for Trainers, and we’re honored to ‘Celebrate Pokémon Together’ with them by revealing what’s next for the ever-evolving franchise,” said Kenji Okubo, president of The Pokémon Company International. ![]() The mosaic is composed of photos and videos submitted by fans showcasing their passion for Pokémon as part of a full-year brand campaign inviting them to “ Pokémon Together.” Highlights included the reveal of The Hidden Treasure of Area Zero, new DLC for the blockbuster Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet video games Pokémon Concierge, a new stop-motion Netflix series Pokémon Trading Card Game Classic, a premium Pokémon TCG set a much-anticipated update about Pokémon Sleep the Pokémon GO Plus + device newly discovered Pokémon multiple in-game events for current titles and more.Īdditionally, in celebration of Pokémon’s global fanbase on Pokémon Day, The Pokémon Company International revealed a digital mosaic in the style of the iconic Poké Ball. The LASER was actually a complete coincidence. ![]() I was initially distressed about the unchecked squares, but once I realized that SAFE would fit into them, they became an asset in my book! I then stuck in the CANNON and started filling. I was originally shooting for three such zones, but that just wasn't working-I didn't want any "extraneous" blocks to mess up the visual and I also wanted to squeeze in the revealer SPACE INVADERS. I was relieved to see that the surrounding fill in the upper center wasn't a complete disaster. Then somehow, by a stroke of luck (which I partially credit to having happened to have added SKI BOOT to my word list just a few months earlier), I found this solution. For the longest time I was convinced it wasn't going to work as I experimented with block pattern after block pattern! I tried having the M where the P was and even having the word read counterclockwise. I also wasn't finding enough ET entries that were legit with or without the ET using any other arrangement. My most compelling alternative was having four ETs in each row, but I didn't like how short all the ET entries would have to be (since the grid is only 21 columns wide). I tried several other arrangements before settling on the one you see. ![]() Right off the bat, I knew I wanted to represent the aliens as ETs, though I wasn't sure how many to include or even how they would work thematically. But I felt inspired, so I set to work on the puzzle instead! (The work did eventually get done, of course.) When I got back to my dorm room, I probably should've focused on making up all the schoolwork I'd missed while at the ACPT. Finally, on the journey from Stamford to Stanford, the idea of doing a Space Invaders puzzle suddenly came to me! I also decided on the spot that the puzzle would be a Sunday rather than a daily. Nonetheless, the idea stuck in the back of my head, and I continued to think about other possibilities throughout the tournament. At the time, none of us could think of any games that hadn't been done and that might lend themselves well to puzzles. As a group, we recalled that Frogger, Pac-Man, Clue, and Monopoly puzzles had already been done. There wasn't a single person at the table whose work I don't consistently admire, so it was truly an honor to be included!Īnyway, I believe it was Natan who brought up the idea of puzzles themed around games. We had a lot of fun talking shop and tossing around crossword ideas on the spot! I'm quite sure I'm forgetting some names, but I know the group included Kevin Der, Sam Ezersky, Joel Fagliano, Neville Fogarty, Josh Knapp, Natan Last, Kyle Mahowald, and Finn Vigeland. A whole group of us went out to an Italian restaurant in Stamford (called Zazu, which inspired us all to try constructing mini puzzles with ZAZA at 1-Across after our meal) one night and then to a Mexican restaurant the next night (whose name was regrettably much less interesting from a crossword constructor's standpoint). The inspiration for this puzzle was a dinner with other young constructors at the ACPT. ![]() ![]() ![]() ^ "Dating sims don't get much more awkward than One Night Stand"."Is One Night Stand the most realistic videogame portrayal of sex and relationships yet?". ^ "One Night Stand for PlayStation 4 Reviews".^ "One Night Stand for Switch Reviews"."Awkward visual novel One Night Stand is coming to consoles this summer".
